Support Survivors This Holiday Season!
Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to change a life. For the past 40 years, SafeHouse Denver, with the help of community members like you, has been devoting their time to supporting survivors of domestic violence. Survivors like Juliana.

Only a few minutes. That’s all it took for me to know I had to leave.
The idea had been building for months, but when my little girl looked up at me and asked, “Why does Daddy make you cry?” I knew I couldn’t
stay any longer. I thought my marriage was going to be the perfect one. I married my high school sweetheart, and we had a beautiful baby girl. The jealously,
possessiveness and verbal abuse started slowly, then gradually escalated, but I was sure I could fix everything. Yet my husband’s abuse continued and
the physical violence became more frequent and explosive.
When my daughter caught a cold, I somehow talked my husband into letting me take her to the Emergency Room by myself. Going somewhere without him was hardly ever allowed. I knew this was my chance.
Only a few minutes. That’s how long I had when I was finally alone with the nurse. I asked her if she knew of any shelters for women and children. She helped me call SafeHouse Denver’s 24-Hour Crisis Line. Two beds were available and they even sent a taxi to pick us up. Those few minutes, and that call, saved both of our lives.
I had no money, no ID cards, not even have a change of clothes. SafeHouse Denver helped me overcome every challenge, and allowed me to feel like I was finally free. This holiday season, my daughter and I will have peace, comfort, and joy – thanks to SafeHouse Denver.
Juliana’s story is not uncommon. When a survivor makes the decision to seek help, timing can be critical. That is why SafeHouse Denver is – and must remain – a constant resource in our community, and why your support is vital this holiday season.
