The Colorado Homeless Contribution Tax Credit—Explained!

What if your donation to SafeHouse Denver could positively impact the community, and lower your Colorado tax bill? Thanks to the Colorado Homeless Contribution Tax Credit, or HCTC, it can.

When you donate to approved nonprofits like SafeHouse Denver, you can receive 25% of your donation back as a Colorado state tax credit. Unlike a standard tax deduction, a tax credit reduces your taxes dollar-for-dollar. It directly lowers what you owe the State of Colorado.

For example:

If you donate $1,000 you’ll receive a $250 state tax credit.
If you donate $5,000 you’ll receive a $1,250 state tax credit.

That’s real savings while helping people in need. Your HCTC-approved donation helps fund critical services at SafeHouse Denver, like:

  • Emergency shelter and support for survivors of domestic violence and their children

  • Outreach to people experiencing homelessness

  • Prevention services for families at risk

  • Supportive housing programs

  • Employment assistance

Here’s how to receive the HCTC credit on your donations to SafeHouse Denver:

  1. Donate $500 or more.

  2. Receive a confirmation and simple filing instructions.

  3. Submit your application before the end of the quarter.

  4. SafeHouse Denver approves your application.

  5. You receive your tax credit certificate by email.

There are a few guidelines for receiving the HCTC, like:

  • Tax credit recipient must be a Colorado resident

  • The taxpayer cannot directly benefit from the contribution

  • Donor Advised Funds are not eligible

  • Foundations and other tax-exempt organizations do not qualify

  • Service fees do not qualify

  • Maximum credit per taxpayer per year: $100,000 ($1 million donation)

When you utilize the HCTC program, you’re not just making a donation, you’re helping individuals and families rebuild their lives, while also receiving a meaningful credit for your Colorado state taxes.
